  Introduction to Roulette

Secrets of Winning Roulette /by Marten Jensen/        Many myths and rumors surround the history of Roulette, adding an air of mystic to the already intriguing game. There are tales of Blaise Pascal, a 17th Century French mathematician, inventing Roulette and stories that the game was created in China and brought to Europe by Dominican monks who were trading with the Chinese.
Although the origin of Roulette is unclear it’s popularity in the late 18th century, beginning with the elitists gambling palace at Monte Carlo in Monaco, is very well known. The name itself, ‘Roulette,’ is a French word meaning Small Wheel which signifies the game, as we know it today, originated somewhere within the French culture.
Monaco is the smallest country in the world measuring approximately three-quarters of a square mile. When history led the Principality to financial problems towards the end of the 1800’s Prince Charles, ruler of Monaco at the time, decided to bring gambling to Monaco. Although he allowed the gambling venture to proceed he was unsure it would succeed.
Francois Blanc was a highly successful casino operator in Germany at the time and when he heard of the Monaco Monte Carlo project he was very intrigued. In 1863 Blanc signed a 50-year franchise contract and built the luxurious Monte Carlo casino in a manner to attract the richest members of society. Blanc persuaded French authorities to build a highway to Monte Carlo and to extend the railway from Nice, which opened Monte Carlo to the world.
Although over time gambling became legalized throughout nearby France the game of Roulette remained exclusive to Monte Carlo until 1933, which kept not only the luxurious Monte Carlo Casino popular but also the game of Roulette.

Basics info

Get the Edge at Roulette (How to Predict Where the Ball Will Land!) Chips are purchased from the Roulette Dealer and assigned the value you choose per chip but remaining within the table minimum and maximum.

Wagers are made by placing your chips on the table in positions correlating with where you expect the ball to land on wheel. You can bet on color, odd/even, single numbers (including zero/double zero), combinations of numbers, or groups of numbers.

As you play you need to meet the minimum bet requirement. If the minimum bet is one dollar and you are playing 25-cent chips you need to play at least four chips bringing your total bet to $1. Many tables separate the outside from the inside when meeting the minimum bet requirements which means you are not allowed to split the minimum bet between the inside and outside betting areas. If you chose to play both you must meet the minimum both inside and outside. For example, on a $1 minimum table you must play at least $2 if you want to play both the inside and the outside betting areas.

The Roulette operator known as the banker, croupier, or dealer spins the wheel after wagers have been placed and releases an ivory marble into the bowl in the opposite direction of the spinning wheel. You are allowed to continue betting beginning from the time the last games marker is removed from the betting area, after the ball is released for the next game, and until the time the dealer waves their hand over the table and says, "No more bets."

When the spinning wheel slows the marble will come to rest in one of the compartments that will be the winning bet. The marker is placed on the Roulette Table’s corresponding number to where the ball landed and wagers are paid appropriately before removing the marker and moving on to the next game.

Betting Options

Inside bets can be placed straight up or in variations of ways to include multiple numbers on a single bet. This is done by placing your chip(s) in a position to touch all the numbers you wish to bet on or on the side of the row for the Trio, Five and Six Number Bets. Paybacks to the various bets are as follows:

Type of Bet Bet Pays
Straight Bet pays 35 to 1
Split Bet pays 17 to 1
Trio Bet pays 11 to 1
Corner Bet pays 8 to 1
Five Number Bet pays 6 to 1
Six Number Bet pays 5 to 1

Roulette Wheel Layout

Spin Roulette Gold : Secrets of Beating the Wheel The Roulette Wheel is the movable ‘bowl’ portion of the roulette table that is divided into red and black compartments that are alternately, but not sequentially, numbered from 1 to 36. Additionally, there is one 0 compartment and in the United States also a 00.

Where the numbers 0 and 00 are used they sit opposite each other on the wheel, all other numbers alternate red and black around the wheel.

Directly opposite each odd number is the next highest even number and pairs of odd numbers along with pairs of even numbers are found alternately around the wheel.

Roulette Table Layout

All about Roulette /by John Gollehon / The Roulette Table has spaces colored and numbered to correspond with the colors and numbers of the wheel compartments.

Bettors have a choice of placing inside or outside bets. The Inside Bet is a wager on the numerical symbols or combinations of numbers ranging from 1 to 36, including 0 and 00.

Outside bets include segments of one third of the possible numbers to come up, excluding 0 and 00. These bets pay you 2 to 1, meaning if you bet $1 and the number comes up within the group you bet on you win $2 plus you keep your original bet of $1.

Basics of Winning Roulette /by J. Edward Allen/ Also on the outside are options to wager on the numbers 1 to 18 or 19 to 36; even or odd; red or black. These pay 1 to 1 and are known as even money bets. They exclude the 0 and 00, which increases the house advantage and makes these bets less than a fifty/fifty chance.

  European VS American

  Tips to improve odds

The main difference between the European and American Roulette Wheel is the zeros. The European Roulette Wheel, with one zero and no double zero, alters the house edge in favor of the gambler in comparison to American Roulette. This zero/double zero discrepancy changes the house advantage from 2.7 percent with the European Wheel to 5.26 on the American Roulette Wheel possessing both the zero and the double zero.

Also, in European and English casinos there is an option to use the en prison rule. This allows the gambler, if the zero comes up, to either surrender one half of their outside wagers or to leave them for the next game.

When you add in the en prison factor, also known as ‘Surrender,’ the house advantage drops even lower on the European Wheel taking it to 1.352 percent. This is a very inviting play compared to the 5.26 percent in the United States.

Another notable difference between the two games is the chips. When you buy in at the Roulette table in American casinos you will be given a stack of colored chips where your wagers can be differentiated from other players chips on the table. In the European game all chips are the same color and memories are relied on rather than vision to separate players bets.

Play Roulette, Play Roulette, Play Roulette Track the numbers
If a number repeats often within 100 spins you may have found a biased wheel that can turn the house advantage around to your favor. A biased wheel is one of only two true opportunities to overcome the casino's advantage. The other is described next.

Play Roulette, Play Roulette, Play Roulette Watch for "Dealer Signature"
Dealer signature is when an experienced dealer spins the wheel and releases the ball with approximately the same speed and trajectory consistently from spin to spin. As long as there is little or no deflection from the metal stops on the wheel, it is possible to predict where the ball will drop. At least within a particular zone on the wheel

Play Roulette, Play Roulette, Play Roulette Cash in your Chips before you leave the table
You must buy in before playing roulette and exchange the colored chips for regular casino chips when leaving the table.

Play Roulette, Play Roulette, Play Roulette Avoid the 5 number bet
Always avoid the five number bet (covering 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3), it has the least profitable payback of all the bets. The house advantage on this bet is a whopping 7.89 percent.

Play Roulette, Play Roulette, Play Roulette Play the European Wheel
If given a choice between European and American Roulette remember the odds are more in your favor with the European Wheel. Playing the European wheel lowers the house edge to 2.63 percent.

Play Roulette, Play Roulette, Play Roulette Look for the En Prison option
The best bet on the table is the even money outside bet on a European Roulette Wheel when the en prison rule, or Surrender, is offered.
